In When The Sparrow Falls, Sharpson reminds us that great science fiction is not always set in outer space with threadbare tropes of gigantic space battles and stereotypical evil galactic-spanning corporations. He shows us that great science fiction is also great literature. I hesitate to even classify this magnificent work into a category as narrow as sci fi.There are so many facets to this story that I don’t even know how to categorize it. Is it a story about a post-singularity utopia, a cautionary tale warning us against creeping totalitarianism in the name of protecting humanity (sound familiar?), a love story, a philosophical musing on the nature of god, or a murder mystery? Actually it’s all of the above.Here Sharpson deftly weaves an engaging storyline while presenting the reader with thought provoking concepts. In each case he never actually takes a position but presents both sides of the case and then leaves it up to us to contemplate. What is good and what is evil? Does the soul exist? What is the nature of God? Would uploading your mind to a virtual world be a utopia or a living hell? If super-AI minds existed, would it be a good idea to let them run the world on our behalf? Sharpson presents these moral quandaries to us in a story set in a very believable totalitarian communist country told through the eyes of a State Security Agent assigned to investigate a murder and accompany an AI in a human clone body who is visiting this closed country from the outside (virtual) world.Even when the characters discuss the nature of God, I could not tell if Sharpson is an atheist or a believer. One one hand, he makes the case against a living God, only to turn around and present a strong case for His existence. He quotes the Book Of Matthew throughout and even the title is paraphrased from Jesus, yet ends the book with a question mark. In this topic and the others, I realized that Sharpson wants us to make up our own minds. Critical thinking, what a concept!This is the best book I have read in a long long time. I only hope it does not get buried in the Science Fiction section only to be missed by other readers.More, please!
